He's Off Again

This site came about because of a dream. It was a dream for a simpler life in a warmer climate, surrounded by nature and not the concrete jungle I had become accustomed to. For me, after much toil and determination, the dream finally became a reality, leading to a renewed and wonderful life in Portugal.

I'm Ashley

Here is an ongoing story, shared to motivate others to fulfil their own dreams, be it to reside in Portugal or somewhere else. A life for the expatiate in this country, is one worth cherishing. It can be a difficult journey to achieve the dream, but once here, the rewards are truly tremendous to say the least.

Discover How This Journey All Started

Where did this blog and story really begin? As so often the case, it started with a dream, a dream of a more relaxed way of life in retirement. It started well before my anticipated retirement age. In fact, it started in about 2005. At that time, I was running a very successful business and had a partner, friend, and all one could want from life.......

More Efficient Heating

A switch and soldering iron along with lead can keep you warm is the story of this long overdue blog post. It has been some time since my last post as even, being a retired person, I seem to have had little time to write anything. There have been water leaks here, there and everywhere

NIF Number Required for 9 Cent Spend.

There are times when there appears to be no logic in how things work here in Portugal. I’ve bought many items for amounts up to perhaps 1200 euros and almost never have I been asked for my NIF number. For those that don’t know what that is, it’s a tax identification number associated to those

There is No Rush for the Portuguese

It all seems to have been very hectic here. I’m not sure why though because all that’s happening, happens very slowly. For some reason, I seem bogged down with work and my Portuguese lessons add some, as does my home study. Arranging the heating in some ways has been a nightmare and I never appreciated

My Electric Wiring Has Retired

It’s a delightful thing being a home owner, and it’s even better when you don’t know what the hell has occurred in that home in past times, and therefore provides many an unexpected surprise. My electrics are dicky and I mean dicky big time. On occasions I feel it’s Christmas Day with the flashing lights
